Names, then numbers.

A column per series. The builder works out the rest.

Categories and values

One row per category: its name, then a number. Type over the sample in the table, or switch to Text and paste columns from a spreadsheet or a CSV file.

Two or more series

Each extra column of numbers is another series, drawn side by side with its own color in the legend. In the table, Add column makes one. Up to 8 fit.

Stacked

With two or more series, choose Stacked beside Type to pile them into one bar per category, when the total matters as much as the parts.

Horizontal

Choose Horizontal bar for long names or many categories. Vertical bars tilt long labels to fit; horizontal ones keep them level.

Values on the bars

Tick “Show values on the chart” under More settings, Style to print each number at the end of its bar.

Below zero

Negative values hang below the axis, so losses and refunds read as plainly as gains.

When bars say it best.

And when another chart says it better.

Comparing categories
Bars start at zero and line up on one baseline, so their lengths compare honestly: tickets per channel, sales per region, votes per option.
Two groups, side by side
A grouped (double) bar graph puts this year beside last year, or plan A beside plan B, category by category. Two or three series read best.
Not for long time series
A dozen bars of months works. Fifty weeks of three series is a picket fence: a line graph shows the trend better.

How do I make a double bar graph?

Give the data two columns of numbers after the names, one per group, like last quarter and this quarter. The bars for each category stand side by side, with a legend for the two colors.

How do I make a horizontal bar chart?

Choose Horizontal bar under Type. The same data is drawn sideways, which gives long category names room and suits rankings read from the top down.

Grouped or stacked: which should I use?

Grouped when you compare the series with each other, category by category. Stacked when each bar’s total matters and the series are its parts, like revenue by product per quarter.

Does the axis start at zero?

Yes. A bar’s length is its value, so a bar graph that starts above zero exaggerates differences. If you need to zoom in on small changes, a line graph is the honest choice.

Which size should I download?

Slide (1600 × 900) for a presentation, Email (600 × 300) as a PNG for a newsletter or report, and README (1200 × 600) as an SVG for GitHub. Fewer categories read better at the small sizes.

Is it free, and is my data uploaded?

Free, with no account. The graph is drawn in your browser, and nothing you type or paste is uploaded. An editor link carries all your data after the # in the address, which browsers never send to a server.
