Terms of service
The rules for using Boring Utils, in plain English. The most important one: our tools tell you what they found, and you stay responsible for your certificates, domains and charts.
1. Who we are and what you’re agreeing to
Boring Utils (boringutils.com) is operated by Lucas Puhl Gasperin, based in Brazil (“we”, “us”). These terms apply when you use the website, its tools, its emails or its guides (together, the “services”). By using them, you agree to these terms, our acceptable use policy and our privacy policy. If you buy a paid plan, our refund policy applies too.
The services are meant for professional use and for your own projects. If you use them on behalf of a company, you confirm you may accept these terms for it. You must be old enough to enter into a contract where you live.
2. The services
- Expiry Watch checks TLS certificates and domain registration expiry, and monitors up to 10 domains for free with email alerts.
- Scheduled-job checks email you when a job you added stops calling its link on time; the free plan checks one job.
- DNS and email checks read a domain’s public DNS records, such as its CAA records in the CAA record checker and, on a paid plan, its SPF and DMARC records.
- Chart Link is a chart builder that runs in your browser and exports SVG and PNG files.
- Guides explain the problems these tools address.
- Paid plans (Plus, Agency and MSP) watch more domains, as the pricing page describes.
- Early-access lists let you hear when checkout for the paid plans opens.
Everything except the paid plans is free. We may change, add or remove features, or stop offering a service. If we stop monitoring you rely on, we’ll try to tell you by email beforehand.
3. Our tools inform. They never guarantee.
Please read this section carefully: it explains what the services can and can’t do for you.
- Monitoring is best-effort. Checks can be delayed, can fail or can miss a problem. Alert emails can be delayed, filtered as spam or lost. A check describes what our checker saw at that moment, from where it runs, which may differ from what others see.
- You stay responsible for renewing your certificates and domains, for configuring your servers, and for having whatever monitoring your situation needs. Expiry Watch is a reminder, not a safety system.
- No statement of security or compliance. A passing check means a certificate looked valid when we checked it. It doesn’t mean a site is secure, compliant with any standard, or free of other problems.
- Charts show the data you give them. Check that a chart and its numbers are right before you rely on it or share it.
- Guides are general information, accurate to the best of our knowledge on the date shown. Vendors change their products; verify anything critical against the sources each guide lists.
4. Provided as-is
To the extent the law allows, the services are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, availability or uninterrupted operation.
5. Limits on our liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost profits, lost revenue, lost data, downtime or damage to reputation, including losses caused by an expired certificate or domain, a missed or late alert, or an incorrect check result.
Our total liability for any claim about the services is limited to the amount you paid us for them in the 12 months before the event that caused the claim.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law, such as liability for fraud or, where consumer protection law applies, rights that can’t be waived.
6. Your responsibilities
- Give an email address that is yours, or that you are allowed to sign up, and keep it working if you want alerts.
- On a paid plan, add only alert addresses (including a Slack or Teams channel’s email address) that you are allowed to send alerts to. Each one confirms itself before it gets any email.
- Keep the links we email you private: anyone with one can manage what it opens.
- Use the services lawfully and in line with the acceptable use policy.
- Don’t rely on the services alone for anything where a missed alert would cause serious harm.
7. Your data and charts
You keep all rights to the data you put into the services and to the charts you make. Chart Link’s builder works in your browser, so that data doesn’t reach us. For the data we do handle (your email address, watched domains, check results and, on a paid plan, the alert addresses, client group names and imported lists you give us), the privacy policy explains what we do with it. If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without owing you anything.
8. Our content
The site, its design, its text and its guides belong to Boring Utils. You’re welcome to copy and use the code snippets and commands in our guides in your own work, with no attribution needed. Please don’t republish the guides themselves; link to them instead.
9. Email
We email you only after you confirm your address (double opt-in), and only about what you signed up for. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link.
10. Paid plans
Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com, the merchant of record for all our orders. Paddle takes the payment, issues the invoice, handles sales tax and answers questions about orders, and its buyer terms apply to the purchase. Our refund policy says when you get your money back: ask within 30 days of any payment, on any paid plan, and we refund it in full.
A paid plan belongs to the email address that bought it. There is no password: you manage the plan, its domains and its alert addresses from links we email to that address.
11. Suspension and ending
You can stop using the services at any time and unsubscribe from any email. We may suspend or end access for anyone who breaks these terms or the acceptable use policy, or where we need to protect the services or other people.
12. Other sites and services
The services link to and rely on other sites and providers (for example the sites you check and the sources our guides cite). We don’t control them and aren’t responsible for them.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. When the substance changes, we update the date at the top, and if the change matters to people who receive our email, we tell confirmed subscribers before it takes effect. Using the services after a change means you accept the new terms.
14. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Brazil. Disputes go to the courts of Brazil, unless the law of the country where you live gives you the right to bring a claim in your local courts.
